TriphalaAyurveda's Most Versatile Formula — Three Fruits, Infinite Benefits

Triphala — literally "three fruits" — is the most widely used and most thoroughly researched classical formula in Ayurveda. It is not simply a laxative, as it is commonly miscategorised in the West. Classical texts describe it as a Rasayana (rejuvenator) that can be safely used lifelong, that balances all three doshas, and that supports digestion, immunity, tissue nutrition, vision, and metabolic health simultaneously. One formula. Extraordinary range.

The Three Fruits — Individual Profiles

Amalaki

Emblica officinalis

Pitta-pacifying

Taste: Sweet, sour, astringent, bitter, pungent (five of the six tastes)

The cooling, nourishing, antioxidant fruit that protects and rebuilds. Highest natural source of Vitamin C. Specifically nourishes Rakta Dhatu and supports liver, skin, and hair. Counterbalances the astringency of the other two fruits.

Bibhitaki

Terminalia bellirica

Kapha-pacifying

Taste: Astringent (primarily)

The scraping, drying, Kapha-reducing fruit. Specifically targets mucus accumulation in the lungs and digestive tract, reduces fat tissue excess, and has strong anti-microbial properties. Classical texts use it specifically for obesity, respiratory congestion, and Kapha accumulation.

Haritaki

Terminalia chebula

Vata-pacifying

Taste: All six tastes (unique in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia)

Called the "Mother of herbs" — Haritaki is a tonic for the nervous system, digestive system, and brain. It is the primary bowel-regulating fruit, gently promoting peristalsis without creating dependency. Its unique ability to contain all six tastes makes it the most balancing single herb in Ayurveda.

Benefits of Triphala — Evidence & Classical Use

Gentle Bowel Regulation

Triphala is the benchmark Ayurvedic bowel regulator — not a stimulant laxative but a tonic that strengthens the intestinal walls, regulates peristalsis, and can be used lifelong without dependency. Studies confirm effectiveness in chronic constipation.

Gut Microbiome Support

Modern research shows Triphala polyphenols are prebiotics — selectively feeding Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species while inhibiting pathogenic bacteria. This is the classical understanding expressed through modern science.

Eye Health & Vision

Triphala eyewash (cooled Triphala water used as eye rinse) is a classical practice for reducing eye strain, redness, and early-stage cataracts. It is used in Ayurvedic clinics for glaucoma support and is rich in Vitamin C that protects the lens.

Weight Management

Triphala reduces body weight, BMI, and waist circumference through its Ama-clearing action and support of fat metabolism. It is not a fat burner — it removes the Ama blockages that prevent normal fat utilisation.

Antioxidant & Anti-inflammatory

Triphala contains tannins, gallic acid, ellagic acid, and chebulinic acid — among the most potent plant antioxidants known. It outperforms Vitamin C and E in free radical scavenging in some laboratory comparisons.

Blood Sugar Regulation

Multiple studies show Triphala reduces fasting blood glucose and HbA1c in Type 2 diabetics. Its chromium content and intestinal enzyme inhibition effects are cited as mechanisms for glycaemic control.

Dosage, Timing & How to Take Triphala

For Digestion & General Wellness

1/2 to 1 tsp powder in warm water, 30 minutes before bed. This is the most common, most studied dosage. Begin with 1/4 tsp and increase gradually to avoid initial loose stools.

For Weight Management

1/2 tsp in warm water twice daily — once in the morning (30 min before breakfast) and once at night before bed. Consistent use for 3+ months required.

For Eye Health (Triphala Eyewash)

Boil 1 tsp in 500ml water. Cool, strain through fine cloth until completely clear. Use as eye wash twice daily — rinse each eye gently for 30 seconds. Reduces strain and redness within days.

As a Rasayana (Long-term Rejuvenator)

Classical protocol varies by season: with honey in summer, rock salt in monsoon, sugar in autumn, ginger in winter, pippali in spring. 1/2 tsp with the relevant carrier at bedtime.

Who should avoid: Pregnant women, those with severe diarrhoea or acute dysentery, and individuals on blood-thinning medication (Triphala has mild antiplatelet activity). Children under 5 should use only under guidance.
