Skin Care in AyurvedaGlowing Skin Through Blood Purification, Not Topical Creams

In Ayurveda, the skin is called the Tvak — a reflection of the quality of blood and the state of the liver. Every skin condition — from acne and eczema to dullness and premature ageing — is primarily an internal condition manifesting externally. This is the fundamental distinction from modern skincare, which applies solutions to the surface of a problem rooted in the blood (Rakta Dhatu) and digestive fire (Agni).

Your Dosha & Your Skin Type

Vata Skin

Dry, thin, fine-pored, cool to touch

Concerns: Premature wrinkles, cracking, flaking, rough patches, dehydration lines

Approach: Deep nourishment and hydration — sesame oil massages, Shatavari internally, Kumari (aloe) topically, ghee in diet

Pitta Skin

Sensitive, combination, prone to redness, warm, oily in T-zone

Concerns: Acne, rosacea, inflammation, easy sunburn, pigmentation, freckles

Approach: Blood cooling and purification — Manjistha, Neem, cooling diet, avoid spicy and fermented foods

Kapha Skin

Oily, thick, large-pored, cool, smooth, prone to congestion

Concerns: Whiteheads, blackheads, cystic acne, excess sebum, dull lustre, enlarged pores

Approach: Stimulation and scraping — dry brushing, Neem, Triphala internally, light diet, exercise

Herbs for Glowing Skin & Blood Purification

Manjistha

Rubia cordifolia

Raktashodhana — blood purifier

Manjistha is the premier blood-purifying herb in Ayurveda and the most important single herb for skin conditions. Its deep red colour is a visual signature of its affinity for the blood tissue (Rakta Dhatu). It clears Pitta and Kapha toxins from the blood, reduces melanin overproduction (hyperpigmentation), and supports lymphatic drainage. For acne, it addresses the root cause — blood toxicity — rather than the surface symptom.

Primary Indications: Acne, pigmentation, uneven skin tone, chronic skin conditions, lymphatic congestion, Pitta-Kapha skin

Neem

Azadirachta indica

Anti-microbial & skin detoxifier

Neem is one of the most bitter herbs in nature — and bitterness directly purifies the blood in Ayurvedic understanding. Its antibacterial and antifungal properties make it effective against acne bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes), fungal skin conditions, and Kapha-type skin congestion. Internally, it clears blood heat; externally, it reduces sebum overproduction and bacterial load on the skin.

Primary Indications: Acne, fungal skin conditions, oily skin, Pitta-Kapha skin conditions, hyperpigmentation

Sariva

Hemidesmus indicus

Cooling blood purifier

Sariva is called the Indian Sarsaparilla — a cooling, sweet blood purifier specifically for Pitta-type skin conditions. Where Manjistha is powerful and scraping, Sariva is gentle and nourishing — ideal for sensitive, reactive, or inflamed skin. It reduces the burning, redness, and heat-sensitivity of Pitta skin while supporting kidney excretion of blood toxins.

Primary Indications: Sensitive Pitta skin, rosacea, eczema, urticaria, burning skin sensations

Kumari (Aloe Vera)

Aloe barbadensis

Cooling tissue healer

In Ayurveda, Kumari is used both internally and externally for skin health. Taken internally (30ml fresh gel in the morning), it cools the liver and blood — addressing the root of Pitta skin conditions. Applied externally, it is the most soothing herb for burns, inflammation, and dry Vata skin. It regulates menstrual cycles when taken internally, making it particularly useful for hormonal skin conditions in women.

Primary Indications: Pitta and Vata skin, sunburn, dry skin, hormonal acne, internal liver cooling

Diet for Glowing Skin

Skin-Brightening Foods

  • Amalaki (Amla): Highest natural Vitamin C source — directly stimulates collagen synthesis and brightens skin
  • Pomegranate: Punicalagins specifically protect against UV-induced skin damage and support skin elasticity
  • Coconut water: Cytokinins in coconut water have anti-ageing effects on skin cells — drink daily for hydration
  • Turmeric in warm milk: Curcumin reduces skin inflammation and pigmentation from within — use daily
  • Sesame seeds: Rich in zinc, copper, and selenium — essential minerals for skin repair and melanin regulation
  • Bitter vegetables: Bitter gourd, fenugreek, drumstick — purify the blood and reduce Pitta-Kapha skin toxicity

Foods That Dull & Break Out the Skin

  • Refined sugar: Glycates collagen, promotes inflammation, and is the primary driver of acne and premature skin ageing
  • Dairy products (excess): Milk's growth hormones stimulate sebum overproduction — a direct acne trigger in Kapha and Pitta skin
  • Fermented and sour foods: Excess sour taste aggravates Pitta and Rakta — vinegar, pickles, sour curd worsen skin conditions
  • Fried foods and trans fats: Oxidised oils produce inflammatory metabolites that directly damage skin tissue and accelerate ageing
  • Spicy food in excess: Directly aggravates Pitta and Rakta — worsens rosacea, acne, and sensitive skin conditions
  • Late-night eating: Night eating creates Ama that is expelled through the skin. Most overnight skin repair is blocked when digestion is active
