ManjisthaAyurveda's Premier Blood Purifier & Skin Herb

Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) — whose name translates as "bright red" — is the most important Rakta Shodhana (blood-purifying) herb in Ayurveda. Where skin conditions, lymphatic congestion, or chronic inflammation persist despite other treatments, Ayurvedic texts consistently point back to the quality and purity of Rakta Dhatu. Manjistha is the herb that addresses this root cause most directly and completely.

Manjistha in Classical Ayurveda

Manjistha is classified as the premier Rakta Shodhana (blood purifier) and Rakta Prasadana (blood nourisher) in classical texts. It pacifies Pitta and Kapha doshas, cools the blood, and unblocks the Rasavaha and Raktavaha Srotasas (channels carrying plasma and blood). The Charaka Samhita lists it among the foremost herbs for skin disease, urinary disorders, and conditions of excess Pitta in the blood.

Its rasa (taste) is Tikta (bitter), Kashaya (astringent), and Madhura (sweet) — qualities that together cool inflammation, bind excess Pitta, and nourish tissues. Its primary karma (action) is Varnya (skin brightening), Vishaghna (detoxifying), and Granthighna (lymph-node cleansing) — making it indispensable for any condition where blood quality and lymphatic flow are compromised.

Benefits of Manjistha

Skin Brightening & Hyperpigmentation

Manjistha inhibits tyrosinase (the enzyme that drives melanin production), reducing dark spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Traditional Varnya (complexion-enhancing) usage is supported by its anti-melanogenic mechanism.

Acne & Chronic Breakouts

By purifying Rakta Dhatu and reducing Pitta-driven inflammation, Manjistha addresses inflammatory acne at the root — particularly useful for hormonal, cystic, or congestion-type acne unresponsive to topical treatment alone.

Lymphatic Decongestion

Classical texts describe Manjistha as Granthighna — a lymph-node cleanser. It supports lymphatic flow in conditions of glandular swelling, oedema, and chronic infections where lymphatic stagnation underlies the problem.

Eczema, Psoriasis & Chronic Skin Disorders

As the cornerstone herb in Ayurvedic blood-purification protocols for Kushtha Roga (chronic skin disorders), Manjistha reduces systemic inflammation, skin toxicity, and Pitta-Kapha imbalances driving eczema and psoriasis flares.

Urinary Tract Health

Traditionally used for burning urination and urinary tract inflammation — its Pitta-cooling and antimicrobial properties support the health of Mutravaha Srotas (urinary channels) when Pitta is the primary aggravator.

Joint Inflammation & Gout Support

Manjistha's blood-purifying and uric-acid-reducing action makes it a traditional component of formulas for Vatarakta (gout) and inflammatory arthritis, reducing systemic inflammation that perpetuates joint damage.

Antioxidant & Anti-inflammatory Activity

Research confirms Manjistha's significant antioxidant capacity from alizarin, purpurin, and other anthraquinone glycosides — supporting its traditional role as a systemic anti-inflammatory and tissue-protecting herb.

Liver & Metabolic Support

Traditionally classified as Yakrit-Uttejaka (liver stimulant), Manjistha supports hepatic function and bile flow — improving the liver's capacity to filter and purify blood, reinforcing its skin and detox benefits.

Dosage, Forms & How to Take Manjistha

Manjistha Churna (Powder)

1–3g twice daily

After meals with warm water

The classical form — take consistently for 8–12 weeks for skin and lymphatic conditions. May temporarily redden urine (harmless).

Mahamanjisthadi Kwatha

30–60 ml twice daily

After meals, diluted in warm water

A classical decoction formula combining Manjistha with complementary blood-purifiers for severe Kushtha Roga and chronic inflammatory skin conditions.

Manjistha Tablets/Capsules

500mg–1g twice daily

After meals

Convenient standardised extract — look for products with verified Rubia cordifolia content. Follow manufacturer dosing guidance.

With Neem & Guduchi

As per formulation

After meals

Classical Ayurvedic combination for enhanced blood purification — Neem adds antimicrobial action and Guduchi adds immune modulation to Manjistha's Rakta Shodhana base.

Duration: Rakta Shodhana (blood purification) is a slow process — Manjistha requires 8–12 weeks of consistent use before significant changes in skin tone, acne, or lymphatic congestion are apparent. It is best combined with a Pitta-pacifying diet during this period.

Who Should Use Manjistha with Caution

Pregnancy

Therapeutic doses of Manjistha are generally avoided during pregnancy. Its strong Pitta-reducing and blood-moving action may not be appropriate during gestation — consult a qualified practitioner before use.

Cold or Vata-Dominant Constitutions

Manjistha is cooling and bitter — qualities that can aggravate Vata over time if used in high doses without appropriate warming adjuvants (anupanas). Those who already feel cold should use lower doses with warm water or ginger.

Blood-Thinning Medications

Manjistha has mild anticoagulant properties in laboratory studies. Those on warfarin, aspirin, or other anticoagulants should inform their physician before using Manjistha therapeutically.

Urine Discolouration

Manjistha naturally contains red-orange pigments (alizarin, purpurin) that can temporarily redden urine and stools during use. This is harmless but can be alarming if unexpected. It resolves on stopping use.
