ShilajitThe Destroyer of Weakness — Ayurveda's Most Powerful Rasayana
Shilajit — meaning “conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness” in Sanskrit — is perhaps the most unique substance in Ayurvedic pharmacology. Neither plant nor mineral in the traditional sense, it is a dark resinous exudate that seeps from Himalayan and Altai mountain rocks in summer — formed over millions of years from the compression of plant matter by geological processes. Rich in fulvic acid, humic acid, and over 84 ionic minerals, it is the Ayurvedic Rasayana (Yogavahi) par excellence: a substance that enhances the effect of every herb it accompanies.
Shilajit in Classical Ayurveda
Shilajit is described extensively in the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam. Charaka describes it as a cure for all conditions: “There is no disease on this earth that Shilajit cannot cure when it is administered at the right time, in the right dose, and combined with the right adjunct.” This is not hyperbole — it reflects Shilajit's unique classification as a Yogavahi (potentiating carrier) that enhances the absorption and effect of every substance taken alongside it, essentially amplifying the entire body's capacity to use nutrients and herbs.
It is classified as a Tridosha Shamaka (balancing all three doshas) with primary strength in pacifying Kapha (through its scraping, drying action) and Vata (through its deep nourishing, mineral-dense quality). Its most celebrated use is as the premier Rasayana for men — rebuilding Shukra Dhatu (reproductive tissue) and Ojas while simultaneously improving physical strength and cognitive function.
Rasa
Tikta, Kashaya (Bitter, Astringent)
Purifying and scraping — removes Ama and Kapha accumulation from channels
Virya
Ushna (Heating)
Warming action kindles Agni and promotes circulation to deep tissues
Prabhava (Special Property)
Yogavahi
Enhances the effect of every herb and nutrient taken alongside it — a potentiating carrier
Evidence-Backed Benefits of Shilajit
Testosterone & Male Fertility
In a randomised controlled trial of infertile men, purified Shilajit at 200mg twice daily for 90 days produced a 23.5% increase in total testosterone, 9% increase in FSH, and significant improvements in sperm count, motility, and morphology. The mechanism involves increased mitochondrial energy in Leydig cells that produce testosterone.
Mitochondrial Energy Production
Fulvic acid — Shilajit's primary active compound — directly enhances mitochondrial function by improving electron transport chain efficiency. This translates to measurably increased ATP production and reduced chronic fatigue. Studies show significant reductions in fatigue scores in both healthy individuals and those with chronic fatigue syndrome.
Cognitive Function & Memory
Shilajit prevents the accumulation of tau protein — a hallmark of Alzheimer's pathology. Its fulvic acid component reduces neuroinflammation and prevents aggregation of amyloid plaques. Traditional use as a Medhya Rasayana (brain tonic) for memory and intelligence is supported by multiple animal and preliminary human studies.
Anti-Ageing & Cellular Repair
As a Rasayana, Shilajit's anti-ageing action operates at the cellular level: fulvic acid improves cellular membrane permeability (mineral uptake), reduces oxidative stress on mitochondrial DNA, and has demonstrated telomere protection in preliminary research — directly addressing the cellular mechanisms of ageing.
Altitude Sickness & Oxygen Utilisation
Traditionally used by Himalayan dwellers for altitude sickness, Shilajit increases haemoglobin and red blood cell count, improving oxygen-carrying capacity. Clinical trials confirm its efficacy in reducing acute mountain sickness symptoms — likely through improved mitochondrial efficiency in low-oxygen conditions.
Iron Deficiency Anaemia
Shilajit is rich in humic acid that chelates and delivers iron in a highly bioavailable form. Studies show it significantly increases haemoglobin, haematocrit, and serum ferritin — with particularly good results when combined with iron-rich foods. The fulvic acid also enhances absorption of dietary iron.
How to Identify Pure Shilajit
Shilajit is one of the most adulterated substances in Ayurveda. The market is flooded with synthetic humic acid, soil extracts, and mineral powders sold as Shilajit. The Ayurvedic tradition prescribes Shodhana (purification) of raw Shilajit before use — raw, unpurified Shilajit can contain heavy metals, fungal spores, and free radicals in toxic concentrations. Always buy purified (Shuddha) Shilajit from verified sources.
Solubility Test
Pure resin dissolves completely in warm water, leaving no residue and turning the water golden-brownish. Impure Shilajit leaves sediment or does not dissolve fully.
Flame Test
Pure Shilajit does not flame when touched with a lighter — it chars and forms ash. Adulterated Shilajit with organic fillers will catch flame.
Hardness Test
Genuine resin is hard and brittle at room temperature, becomes pliable with body heat, and flows slowly when warm. Liquid Shilajit is almost always adulterated or diluted.
Smell Test
Authentic Shilajit has a distinctive earthy, tar-like smell — strong but not unpleasant. No smell or artificial fragrance indicates adulteration or processing that destroyed actives.
Certificate of Analysis
Reputable suppliers provide third-party lab reports showing fulvic acid content (minimum 60% in quality resin), heavy metal limits, and absence of microbiological contaminants.
Form & Source
Best sources: Himalayan Shilajit from altitudes above 3,000m. Avoid powder form (most adulterated); prefer resin or standardised capsules from certified manufacturers.
Dosage & How to Take Shilajit
Resin Form
250–500mg (pea-sized)
Morning on empty stomach in warm milk or water
The most bioavailable and authentic form. Dissolve in warm (not boiling) liquid. Start at 250mg and increase to 500mg after 2 weeks. Take for 90-day cycles with 30-day breaks.
Standardised Capsules
250–500mg daily
Morning with warm water
Look for capsules standardised to minimum 50% fulvic acid. Convenient but less potent than pure resin. Use when resin quality cannot be verified.
Classical Formulas
As prescribed
Per Vaidya instructions
Shilajit is a key ingredient in classical compounds like Shilajyadi Vati, Chandraprabha Vati, and Mahatriphala Ghrita — combined with other herbs for specific conditions.
Best Adjuncts (Anupana)
Warm milk (for Shukra building and anti-ageing), warm water (for kidney support and energy), ghee with honey in unequal parts (classical Rasayana method). Never mix with cold or raw foods.
When to Avoid
High uric acid / gout (Shilajit increases uric acid levels). Haemophilia or on anticoagulants. Active infections with fever. Pregnancy. Always avoid unpurified raw Shilajit — heavy metal risk is significant.
