AshwagandhaAyurveda's Most Powerful Adaptogen — Benefits, Dosage & Uses
Ashwagandha — whose name translates as "smell of horse" — promises the strength and vitality of a horse. It is the most researched Ayurvedic herb in modern science, with over 200 published studies. Classical texts describe it as a Rasayana (rejuvenator), Brimhana (builder), and Balya (strengthener) — three qualities that together make it uniquely effective for the stress-depleted modern body.
Ashwagandha in Classical Ayurveda
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is classified as a Medhya Rasayana — a rejuvenator that specifically nourishes the mind — and a premier Vajikarana herb for vitality and reproductive health. The Charaka Samhita lists it among the most important drugs for promoting strength and curing weakness of the body and mind.
Its qualities: Guru (heavy), Snigdha (unctuous) — these are the opposite qualities to Vata (light, dry). Ashwagandha therefore primarily pacifies Vata while building all tissues, making it the ideal remedy for the modern condition of stress-driven depletion: overworked, under-nourished, and constantly anxious.
Evidence-Backed Benefits of Ashwagandha
Reduces Cortisol & Stress
Multiple double-blind trials show Ashwagandha reduces serum cortisol by 15–30% compared to placebo. Participants report significantly lower perceived stress scores within 8 weeks.
Improves Sleep Quality
The withanolide triethylene glycol specifically promotes deep (NREM) sleep. Studies show Ashwagandha root extract significantly improves sleep onset, duration, and quality — with 300mg before bed showing results in 6–10 weeks.
Boosts Testosterone & Male Fertility
Randomised trials show 15–17% increases in serum testosterone and 167% improvement in sperm concentration in infertile men. Ashwagandha is the most evidence-supported natural testosterone support in Ayurveda.
Enhances Muscle Strength & Recovery
Athletes supplementing Ashwagandha show significantly greater gains in muscle mass, strength, and oxygen utilisation (VO2 max) versus placebo. Its anabolic activity aligns with classical Balya (strength-building) usage.
Supports Thyroid Health
Studies in subclinical hypothyroidism show meaningful increases in T3 and T4 with Ashwagandha, consistent with its traditional use as a warming Vata-Kapha pacifier that stimulates metabolic function.
Sharpens Memory & Cognitive Function
As a Medhya Rasayana (brain tonic), Ashwagandha improves reaction time, task performance, and short-term memory. Its anti-inflammatory effect on the brain may protect against neurodegenerative changes.
Immune Modulation
Ashwagandha significantly increases natural killer cell activity, immunoglobulin production, and reduces inflammatory cytokines. Unlike stimulants, it modulates rather than merely stimulates — making it safe for long-term use.
Blood Sugar Regulation
Studies show fasting blood glucose reductions comparable to oral hypoglycaemic drugs in some diabetic subjects. Withaferin A improves insulin sensitivity and pancreatic beta-cell function.
Dosage, Forms & How to Take Ashwagandha
Root Powder (Churna)
3–6g (1 teaspoon)
With warm milk at bedtime or divided morning/night
The classical form — maximum bioavailability when taken with milk and honey or ghee
Standardised Extract
300–600mg
Once daily with breakfast or before bed
KSM-66 and Sensoril are the most studied extracts — look for ≥5% withanolide content
Ashwagandha Ghrita
1 tsp (classical)
Before bed with warm milk
Ghee-processed Ashwagandha for maximum tissue absorption — ideal for severe Vata depletion
Ashwagandhadi Lehyam
1–2 tsp
Morning on empty stomach
Classical herbal jam formulation — combines Ashwagandha with digestive herbs for better absorption
Best time: Most studies use bedtime dosing for sleep and cortisol reduction. For energy and muscle building, morning dosing is preferred. Ashwagandha takes 4–8 weeks of consistent use before full effects are apparent.
Who Should Avoid Ashwagandha
Pregnancy
Ashwagandha has uterine-stimulating properties and is contraindicated during pregnancy. It is traditionally used postpartum for recovery, not during gestation.
Pitta Constitution or High Pitta Conditions
As a warming herb, Ashwagandha can aggravate Pitta in people who already run hot, have inflammatory conditions like ulcers, or a history of autoimmune Pitta disorders.
Thyroid Medication Users
Ashwagandha increases thyroid hormone levels — those on levothyroxine or anti-thyroid medication should monitor their levels carefully and consult their physician.
Autoimmune Conditions
Its immune-stimulating effect may be counterproductive in conditions where the immune system is already overactive (lupus, MS). Use under guidance only.
