BhringrajThe King of Hair Herbs — Benefits, Dosage & Uses
Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) literally means "ruler of hair" in Sanskrit — and classical Ayurvedic texts justify this title fully. As the most important Keshya (hair-nourishing) herb in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, Bhringraj addresses hair fall at its root: excess Pitta in the scalp, liver stress reducing blood quality, and depleted Bhrajaka Pitta that governs skin and follicle health. It is the herb that appears in virtually every classical Ayurvedic hair-care formulation.
Bhringraj in Classical Ayurveda
Bhringraj is classified as Keshya (hair tonic), Rasayana (rejuvenator), and Yakrit-Uttejaka (liver tonic) in classical texts. It pacifies Vata and Pitta while mildly stimulating Kapha — the doshic balance required for healthy hair growth. The Bhavaprakasha lists it as one of the most important herbs for premature greying (Palitya) and hair fall (Khalitya).
Keshya (Hair Tonic)
Directly nourishes hair follicles, scalp tissue, and Bhrajaka Pitta — the sub-Pitta governing skin and hair health. The most important single herb for reducing hair fall and premature greying.
Yakrit Uttejaka (Liver Tonic)
Bhringraj's hepatoprotective compounds directly support liver function — critical because the liver metabolises hormones (particularly DHT) that drive pattern hair fall when excessive.
Rasayana (Rejuvenator)
Classical texts include Bhringraj in long-term Rasayana protocols for longevity and anti-ageing, particularly for grey hair reversal and maintenance of youthful Ojas.
Evidence-Backed Benefits of Bhringraj
Reduces Hair Fall
Bhringraj's most classical use — reducing Khalitya (hair fall) by cooling excess Pitta at the scalp, improving follicle microcirculation, and providing key nutrients (particularly wedelolactone and ecliptine) that sustain follicle health and activity.
Promotes Hair Regrowth
Preclinical studies show Bhringraj extract promotes elongation of hair follicles and shifts follicles from the resting (telogen) to the active growth (anagen) phase — the mechanism behind its traditional use for thinning hair and alopecia.
Slows Premature Greying
Bhringraj is the foremost herb for Palitya (premature greying) in Ayurvedic texts. Its Pitta-reducing action corrects the excess Bhrajaka Pitta that burns out melanocytes prematurely — best used consistently for 3–6+ months.
Scalp Health & Dandruff
The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Bhringraj oil reduce dandruff-causing Malassezia overgrowth and scalp inflammation (Pitta at the scalp level), while the oil base lubricates a dry, flaking Vata-type scalp.
Liver Protection
Wedelolactone and ecliptine protect hepatocytes from oxidative damage, support liver regeneration, and reduce ALT/AST enzyme elevation in studies of liver injury. A healthy liver is the cornerstone of hormonal balance and, consequently, healthy hair.
Stress-Related Hair Loss
Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which accelerates the telogen effluvium hair-shedding pattern. Bhringraj's mild adaptogenic and Vata-pacifying action, combined with its direct follicle support, makes it particularly appropriate for stress-driven hair fall.
Dosage, Forms & How to Use Bhringraj
Bhringraj Churna (Powder)
1–3g twice daily
With warm water or milk after meals
The internal form for systemic benefits — liver health, hormonal balance, and Pitta reduction. Consistent use for 12+ weeks for hair benefits.
Bhringraj Oil (Topical)
Warm oil massage 2–3 times weekly
Leave 30 minutes before washing, or overnight
The classical topical preparation — sesame or coconut base infused with Bhringraj. Warm the oil before application. The cornerstone of Ayurvedic hair care.
Bhringrajasava (Classical Formulation)
15–30 ml twice daily
After meals with equal water
A classical fermented preparation containing Bhringraj and complementary herbs, traditionally used for hair fall, liver conditions, and as a Rasayana.
Bhringraj Capsules/Extract
300–500mg twice daily
After meals
Standardised extract for those preferring a precise dose — particularly useful for the internal liver and hormonal benefits. Look for standardised Eclipta alba extract.
Best results: Combine internal Bhringraj (churna or extract) with regular Bhringraj oil scalp massage for a comprehensive approach — addressing both systemic and local causes of hair fall. Pair with a Pitta-pacifying diet, adequate sleep, and stress reduction for optimal effect.
Who Should Use Bhringraj with Caution
Pregnancy
Therapeutic internal doses of Bhringraj should be used cautiously during pregnancy — consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before use. Topical Bhringraj oil is generally considered safe for scalp application during pregnancy.
Low Blood Pressure
Bhringraj has a mild hypotensive effect. Those with already low blood pressure or on antihypertensive medications should monitor their levels and discuss with their physician before regular internal use.
Severe Kapha Imbalance
As a mildly Kapha-increasing herb, Bhringraj should be used cautiously in those with significant Kapha imbalance (obesity, water retention, sluggish digestion) without appropriate balancing herbs.
Liver Disease
While Bhringraj is generally hepatoprotective, those with known severe liver disease should consult their physician before internal use and should have liver enzymes monitored during supplementation.
