DashamoolaThe Ten Roots Formula — Vata Pacification & Systemic Relief
Dashamoola — "ten roots" in Sanskrit — is one of the most revered classical formulas in Ayurveda, with documented use spanning over 2,000 years. Where single herbs address specific conditions, Dashamoola addresses the root mechanism underlying a wide range of Vata disorders: pain, inflammation, nervous system imbalance, respiratory congestion, and tissue depletion. Its synergistic combination of ten complementary roots produces an action greater than any single component could achieve alone.
The Ten Roots — Brihat & Laghu Panchamoola
Dashamoola comprises two groups of five roots (Panchamoola), each with distinct but complementary actions. The Brihat Panchamoola (large five) primarily act on the respiratory system and musculoskeletal channels; the Laghu Panchamoola (small five) primarily support the urinary and reproductive systems while reducing inflammation.
Brihat Panchamoola (Large Five)
- —Bilva (Aegle marmelos) — digestive, anti-inflammatory
- —Agnimantha (Clerodendrum phlomidis) — Vata-Kapha pacifying
- —Shyonaka (Oroxylum indicum) — respiratory, anti-inflammatory
- —Patala (Stereospermum suaveolens) — Pitta-Vata balancing
- —Gambhari (Gmelina arborea) — Rasayana, nourishing
Laghu Panchamoola (Small Five)
- —Salaparni (Desmodium gangeticum) — nerve tonic
- —Prishniparni (Uraria picta) — anti-inflammatory
- —Brihati (Solanum indicum) — respiratory, digestive
- —Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) — bronchodilatory
- —Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) — urinary, Vata-pacifying
Classical Uses & Benefits of Dashamoola
Pain & Inflammation
Dashamoola's collective anti-inflammatory and analgesic action across the ten roots makes it one of the most effective classical formulas for musculoskeletal pain — joint pain, back pain, sciatica (Gridhrasi), and inflammatory arthritis. Used both internally and externally as medicated oil.
Back Pain & Sciatica
Specifically indicated for Kati Vata (lumbar pain) and Gridhrasi (sciatica) in classical texts — conditions where Vata in the lower back and sciatic nerve pathway produces radiating pain, stiffness, and weakness. Dashamooladi Tailam is applied topically for Kati Basti therapy.
Respiratory Health
Several roots in the Brihat Panchamoola group — particularly Shyonaka and Kantakari — have direct bronchodilatory and mucolytic action. Dashamoola is classically used for Kasa (cough), Shwasa (asthma/breathlessness), and Kaphaja (Kapha-type) respiratory congestion.
Post-Partum Recovery
One of the most important classical uses — Dashamooladi Kashayam is foundational in Sutika (post-partum) Ayurvedic protocols. It reduces post-delivery Vata, supports uterine involution, relieves body aches, and is traditionally given daily for 40–90 days post-delivery.
Panchakarma Basti Base
Dashamoola decoction is the most commonly used base for Niruha Basti (decoction enema) in Panchakarma — the therapy considered most effective for eliminating Vata disorders from the colon and entire body. Dashamoola Niruha Basti is prescribed for neurological and musculoskeletal Vata conditions.
Nervous System Support
The Laghu Panchamoola roots — particularly Salaparni and Prishniparni — have documented adaptogenic and nerve-supportive properties. Dashamoola supports Prana Vata and Vyana Vata's functions throughout the nervous system and circulatory channels.
Forms, Dosage & How to Take Dashamoola
Dashamoola Kwatha (Decoction)
30–60 ml twice daily
Warm, after meals
The most classical form — a water-extracted decoction of the ten roots. Widely used in Ayurvedic hospitals for pain, respiratory, and post-partum conditions. Most effective in the warm, liquid form.
Dashamooladi Kashayam Tablets
2 tablets twice daily
After meals with warm water
Convenient standardised form of the classical decoction — preferred in modern settings for ease of use. Follow manufacturer dosing guidance.
Dashamoola Ghrita (Ghee)
1–2 tsp daily
Before meals or as directed
Ghee-processed Dashamoola for deep tissue nourishment — particularly effective for neurological Vata, post-partum recovery, and when dry, depleted Vata is the primary presentation.
Dashamooladi Tailam (Oil)
External application
Self-massage or Kati Basti
Medicated oil for Abhyanga and Panchakarma applications — particularly for back pain, sciatica, and joint conditions. Warm before application and leave for 30 minutes.
Who Should Use Dashamoola with Caution
Pregnancy
Dashamoola is not recommended during pregnancy as several component roots stimulate Apana Vayu and uterine activity. It is a post-partum herb — extensively used after delivery, not during gestation. Consult a qualified practitioner before any use during pregnancy.
Active Pitta Conditions
While Dashamoola primarily pacifies Vata-Kapha, its warming quality can aggravate acute Pitta conditions — active inflammation, high fever, or acute ulcers. Use cautiously or with appropriate Pitta-cooling adjuncts in Pitta-dominant presentations.
Severe Kidney or Liver Disease
Herbal decoctions are processed by the liver and kidneys. Those with severely impaired organ function should take Dashamoola only under medical supervision with dose adjustment.
Interaction with NSAIDs
For those already on NSAIDs for pain, Dashamoola can reduce the required dose over time — but the combination should be monitored with a physician, particularly if the NSAID dose is being adjusted.
Dashamoola is one of the most important Panchakarma herbs — learn how it is used in Panchakarma — Complete Guide. Its role in back pain and sciatica is covered in Back Pain & Sciatica in Ayurveda. Gokshura — a component of the Laghu Panchamoola group — is covered in detail in Gokshura — Complete Guide.
