Anemia (Pandu Roga) in AyurvedaRebuilding Rakta Dhatu & Restoring Vitality
Pandu Roga — literally "the pale disease" — is Ayurveda's classical description of the fatigue, pallor, breathlessness, and weakness now recognised as anemia. Texts such as the Charaka Samhita describe it as a disturbance of Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) driven by excess Pitta and weakened Agni, impairing the body's ability to form healthy, vibrant blood from digested nutrients. This guide explores that classical view alongside iron-rich foods, traditional herbs, and the critical points at which anemia needs proper medical diagnosis.
The Ayurvedic Understanding of Pandu Roga
Ayurveda identifies five sub-types of Pandu based on the predominant dosha and presentation — Vataja, Pittaja, Kaphaja, Sannipatika (mixed), and Mridbhakshanajanya (linked to eating clay or non-food substances, an observation echoing modern pica associated with iron-deficiency anemia). Across all types, the common thread is impaired Rakta Dhatu formation: either the raw materials (Rasa, from digested food) are insufficient, or Agni is too weak to transform them into healthy blood.
Classical management therefore addresses both ends of the process — strengthening Agni so nutrients are properly absorbed, and providing Rakta-building (hematinic) substances, traditionally iron-rich foods and purified mineral preparations like Lauh Bhasma, to rebuild the blood tissue itself.
Foods & Herbs Traditionally Used to Build Blood
Dates, Raisins & Pomegranate
Classical iron-rich foods recommended in Pandu Roga management, traditionally soaked overnight or taken with warm milk to improve digestibility and absorption.
Beetroot & Leafy Greens
Rich in iron and folate, these are commonly recommended as part of an anemia-supportive diet alongside Vitamin C foods that improve non-heme iron absorption.
Lauh Bhasma
A classical purified iron-bhasma preparation traditionally used to support hemoglobin formation, always taken under practitioner supervision with correct anupana (vehicle) and dosage.
Punarnavadi Mandur
A traditional formulation combining Punarnava with iron-based ingredients, classically used to support healthy blood formation and mild fluid balance.
Amla (Amalaki)
While not iron-rich itself, Amla's high Vitamin C content significantly improves the absorption of iron from plant-based foods when taken together.
Jaggery & Sesame Seeds
Traditional kitchen-medicine staples valued for their iron and mineral content, often included in daily diet for general blood-building support.
Daily Practices to Support Recovery
Pair Iron with Vitamin C
Taking iron-rich foods alongside citrus, amla, or tomatoes significantly improves absorption of non-heme (plant-based) iron.
Avoid Tea/Coffee with Meals
Tannins in tea and coffee inhibit iron absorption — have them at least an hour away from main meals.
Strengthen Agni First
Light, well-spiced, easily digestible meals ensure nutrients — including iron — are properly absorbed rather than passing through undigested.
Adequate Rest
Anemia causes genuine fatigue; avoid overexertion until hemoglobin levels normalise and energy returns.
When Anemia Needs Medical Evaluation
Moderate to Severe Anemia
Hemoglobin significantly below normal range needs medical evaluation to identify the cause and determine whether supplementation, transfusion, or treatment of an underlying condition is needed.
Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
A common but often overlooked cause of iron-deficiency anemia in women — heavy or prolonged periods should be evaluated by a gynaecologist alongside anemia treatment.
Unexplained or Persistent Anemia
Anemia that does not respond to dietary and iron support, or that recurs, may indicate internal bleeding, a chronic disease, or a B12/folate deficiency requiring specific testing.
Pregnancy
Anemia during pregnancy needs close obstetric monitoring, as both maternal and foetal health depend on adequate hemoglobin and iron stores.
